Jazz at Noon – Milwaukee Podcast | Episode Eleven "A Salute to Avocation"

June 23, 2020 by

“A Salute to Avocation” - Avocation is defined as a hobby or activity one does outside of their occupation. And in this case, Don Linke explores some of his musical favorites he personally has enjoyed revamping during his recent “coronavirus vacation.” All selections of this week’s episode are played by Linke himself.

Songs:

Love Walked In - George Gershwin - The tune was composed in 1930, with lyrics written in 1937, when it was featured in the movie musical The Goldwyn Follies. This version was recorded completely by Don Linke himself during his “coronavirus vacation,” for in today’s modern world, he’s able to record himself playing one part and then play against it with another instrument. You’ll hear him playing both the bass and the guitar on Love Walked In.

Josie - Steely Dan - Written by Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, this song was released in 1977 on Steely Dan’s classic album, Aja. Linke revamped this intricate arrangement to play on a solo guitar which he plays to perfection.

Hot House - Dizzy Gillespie - A composition written as a contrafact, or an alternate melody, to Cole Porter’s What Is This Thing Called Love? A bebop standard in the jazz world, Hot House has also been credited to Tadd Dameron in addition to Gillespie - you’ll hear Linke state that it remains a mystery. Don plays both the bass and the guitar in this Dizzy cover.

The Prelude and Fugue in D Major - Johann Sebastian Bach - Don Linke also honed this classical piece on his guitar during his “coronavirus vacation.” The piece can be played by various instruments, and here Linke plays it on his guitar in the Key of D, in drop D tuning.

Tracks for Pagey - Don Linke Trialogue - The final piece of the episode truly falls under the title of the episode, “A Salute to Avocation.” It’s a bonus track on one of Don Linke’s recent CD’s, Momentum. The piece is a tribute to Led Zeppelin, who inspired Linke as a young man to become a musician.
